Nordel was founded in 1963 and was a body for co-operation between the
transmission system operators in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and
Sweden, whose objective was to create preconditions for a further
development of an effective and harmonised Nordic electricity market.
Nordel was also a forum for contacts between the transmission system
operators and representatives of the market participants in the same
countries.
The purpose of Nordel was to issue advice and recommendations promoting
an efficient electric power system in the Nordic region, taking into account
the conditions prevailing in each country.
Nordel contributed to international co-operation and information
exchange pertaining to the electric power system and the electricity
market.
On 1 July 2009 Nordel was wound up. All operational tasks were transferred to ENTSO-E.
