Europe’s energy futures by 2020/2025

Date: 04/07/2017 - ENTSO-E, Brussels

ENTSOs' Scenarios MAF Presentation

Transmission system operators are planning decades ahead to guarantee a safe, affordable and clean electricity supply to customers all year around. They do so at national, regional and pan-European level. This pan-European grid planning is done at ENTSO-E.

To plan TSOs use scenarios. How and where will electricity be produced and consumed; how will market behave; how will new technologies develop. Interaction with other sectors and notably gas are looked at.

On the basis of mid-term (from 5 to 10 years ahead) and long term scenarios (beyond 10 years ahead) ENTSO-E produces an annual mid term adequacy forecast and every two year a 10-year network development plan.

The mid term adequacy forecast analyses the ability for the European system to cover demand in the next 5 to 10 years. The TYNDP looks at the grid development needs on the long term.

On 4 July, ENTSO-E will present to you: 1) the scenarios used for the MAF and the TYNDP. The scenarios of the TYNDP are still under development but a continuity has been ensured between the midterm and long-term perspectives. Additionally, and for the first time the scenarios have been co-created with ENTSOG representing the gas TSOs as there are many synergies between the two networks; 2) the results of the MAF 2017.

Join us at ENTSO-E from 10.00 to 13.00 Brussels time to explore Europe’s energy futures.
